YOUNGSTERS at a children’s home in India are awash with cash thanks to Christleton Brownies.

The money was raised by the 2nd Christleton Brownie pack washing cars at Christleton Methodist Church.

The coffee morning was organised by church members Jim and Val Mountcastle, of Waverton, who came across the Happy Children’s Home in Kovalam on a holiday to Kerala in February this year.

Val said: “We saw a leaflet about the home in a travel agents because they rely so much on money from tourists. When we got home we mentioned it to people at church and they were very keen to send money.”

The Brownies, under the leadership of Guider Anne Stockedale, also manned the cake stall.

The final sum raised was £1,010, which Val has already sent to India.

“Happy Children’s Home is home to 16 boys who are either orphaned or whose parents cannot afford to feed them. There is a lot of poverty in India and this is an amazing place.

“At the moment they are renting the building they are in but they have plans to build their own home.”
