A BUTCHERS proved its products are the best after triumphing at the BPEX butcher roadshow and product evaluation event.

Almost 300 products were entered into the contest, which took place at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton, with Vaughan’s Family Butchers bringing home the bacon.

The company, based in Penyffordd, near Chester, won the meatballs and faggots category champions with their meatballs in tomato and herb sauce.

It was also crowned traditional pork sausage champion.

To top it all, Vaughan’s was named overall champion in the North West.

A delighted Steve Vaughan, said: “It is amazing to have done so well, particularly at an event that is renowned for attracting large numbers of quality butchers.

“We’ve taken part in the competition previously and done well with our ready meals and bacon but never taken the title for our sausages, so I’m made up.”

As well as going forward to the national final in June, Steve’s traditional pork sausage will be put forward for the illustrious Champion of Champions event later in the year.

“We’d actually taken a break from entering as I’d been on the other side, helping to judge events recently and I think that has helped me a lot,” said Steve. “I’ve been able to look at my sausages objectively and recognise those extra little touches that go into making an award-winning sausage.

“I’m also delighted for Helen (Vaughan), despite her beating me to the title as we’d both entered products into the ready meal category. These products always do well and are a popular range in the shop, but the awards add a little extra prominence and will be a welcome boost for our staff and customers.”

The Product Evaluation Events are organised by BPEX and recognise and reward product excellence and innovation among butchers.

The judges mark on overall appearance; size and colour; ease of cutting; texture and structure; and taste and smell.
