Characters from Disney animation Frozen will join the Lord Mayor of Chester at the opening of Poundworld’s second store in the city centre on Thursday, October 9.

Cllr Bob Rudd will officially open the shop, next to Marks & Spencer, in the former USC fashion store, creating 30 jobs.

As part of the opening celebrations, Elsa and Olaf the snowman from the popular sell-out Disney film Frozen will be at the store from Thursday until Saturday to entertain children and shoppers. There will also be sought-after Frozen merchandise on sale at the store opening.

Back in April, the family-owned retailer took over one of the biggest units in the Forum Shopping Centre, previously occupied by the Co-op, which will remain open.

Chris Edwards Junior, trading director at Poundworld, said: “We’re delighted to be opening our new store in Chester on Foregate Street in a prime location creating 30 new jobs in the process.

“We offer consistent low value every day and we hope shoppers will take advantage of the great deals we have on offer on a huge range of products including branded toiletries, groceries and cleaning products to pet care, toys and Halloween items.”

Poundworld was recently the subject of BBC1 documentary ‘Pound Shop Wars’.

The Yorkshire-based company started on a Wakefield market stall in 1997 and now has more than 250 stores.

It claims more than 5,000 products are priced at just £1.

USC shut its doors in September, with parent company Sports Direct declining to give the reasons.

Staff said the company had not been able to come to an agreement with the landlord over the rent, which was “too high”.

They claimed the company was actively seeking another unit in Chester.
