IT WAS inevitable by the time we'd finished climbing Overton Hill the view was going to be good.

Quite how good the chemical plants of Runcorn and the River Mersey could look, from the restaurant of the Forest Hills Hotel in Frodsham, came as something of a surprise.

It was spectacular. To one side the next set for a futuristic sci-fi movie, and to the other, picturesque countryside, although every now and again my eyes were drawn from the panorama to the lawns just outside the windows.

After enjoying the view, it was onto the business of ordering food from the extensive and varied menu.

First up I went for the feta cheese salad with green beans, cherry tomatoes, anchovies and caeser salad dressing. Not usually being a fan of salad I was pleasantly surprised. There were plenty of different tastes to entertain and it made for a great start to a meal.

My girlfriend, Jessica, went for moules mariniere with a sauce that was described as 'gorgeous'.

For my main course I had the sirloin steak served with mushrooms, onion rings and chips, which was very pleasant. The steak was thick and without a morsel of fat.

Jessica described her mushroom and asparagus risotto as simply 'alright' and said that it just wasn't creamy enough.

There was a decent selection of desserts all laid out for inspection.

I opted for the Black Forest gateau and Jessica went for the cheesecake. Both were very tasty and their respective creaminess was just right.

All in all, the total tally was £43.20 for an evening with three courses, various alcoholic drinks, and great views.

The only moment of panic was when I realised the restaurant was non-smoking. But the alarm was unnecessary because there is a section set away from diners, by the bar, for the pursuit of this most unhealthy of hobbies!
