The melodies of one of Western classical music’s most tuneful composers can be heard in Chester Cathedral on Saturday, April 25 at 7.30pm.

The Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is devoting an entire evening to this remarkable Czech composer.

The event will commence with his foot tapping and exuberant Overture, Carnival with its brilliant, bouncing and syncopated main theme.

This will be followed by his violin concerto performed by Olivia Scheepers and the evening will be rounded off with a performance of his Symphony No 7.

Olivia was born in the Netherlands in 1989. In 2009 she moved to London to study at the Royal College of Music, where she completed a degree with honours in 2012.

A pupil of Natalia Lomeiko, she is currently on the Masters programme at the Royal College of Music in London with generous support of the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Stichting Niemeijer Fonds and the LD Trust Award.

She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across England and the Netherlands at such prestigious venues as Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven, Wigmore Hall and Cadogan Hall.

Her orchestral activities include performing at the Royal Albert Hall as the co-concert mistress of the English Chamber Orchestra, and in the RCM Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bernhard Haitink and Vladimir Jurowski.

Olivia plays an HC Silvestre violin (1888) kindly on loan from the Dutch National Music Instrument Foundation.

The whole evening will be under the musical direction of Juan Ortuño. Juan, who also holds a degree in astrophysics is developing an exciting musical career in the UK working with orchestras such as the Manchester Camerata, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Sappha Ensemble.

He has also worked across Europe with the Kammerphilharmonie Graz, and Orquestra Simfònica del Vallés among others.

Juan is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Madrid.
