Chester for the most part defied the gloomy weekend weather forecasts as thousands headed to a sun soaked Roodee on Saturday afternoon (August 22) for Chester Races.

Coleen Rooney and her family attended the Echo Falls Ladies Day, along with Alexandra Light, the style editor of HELLO! Magazine, and the crowd also enjoyed royal company of the four legged kind with The Ring of Truth, owned by Her Majesty the Queen, racing in the Echo Falls Fruit Fusion race at 2.20pm.

According to a spokesperson at Chester Racecourse, attendance was up 27% on the same date last year with 22,526 racegoers enjoying a late summer treat.

Visitors upped the fashion stakes for Ladies Day, with a full card of seven races to keep the crowds entertained.

Popular owner Dr Marwan Koukash enjoyed a victorious day with Ballesteros striding to victory in the first race and Gabrial’s King and Gabrial’s Star taking first and second place in the Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer Chester Stakes at 2.55pm.

A hit on the open course was the 60ft inflatable Titan slide, along with a giant bouncy castle and bungee trampolines, which are all free for children.

Bucket collectors from Alzheimers Society raised cash for the charity at the exits.

The team at Chester Racecourse is now preparing for the Roodee Challenge Polo Weekend on September 4 and 5 and racing will return with the Betfair Autumn Festival on September 11 and 12.
