MARTIAL ARTS: GREAT Sutton youngster Feld Barlow has clinched a place in the WKA (World Kickboxing Association) World Championships in Switzerland in September.
The 12-year-old pocket dynamo has qualified for both the light-contact and semi-contact categories for the event in Basle.
It is the second time that Feld has made it to the World Championships and he will be hoping to go one better this time after finishing light-contact runner-up in the last finals in Vienna in August 2001.
On that occasion, the diminutive powerhouse overcame several larger and older opponents on the way to bagging his silver medal. There are expected to be more than 2,000 competitors from five continents taking part this time out.
Feld, who attends Sutton High School, booked hisplacebyfinishing inthetopthree in both the light-contact and semi-contact qualifying tournaments in Manchester.
Brian Nelson, instructor of the Lau Gar School of kung fu in Ellesmere Port, said: 'I wouldn't be surprised if Feld goes on and wins. He's got a lot of hard work to put in between now and the autumn but he's certainly got the talent to be World Champion in his class. I've always rated him and he's improved greatly throughout the time he's been with us.
'A large part of Feld's success is down to the fact that he listens to what you're telling him.
'He also uses his head a lot more now when he's in combat and is a thinking fighter rather than just going out and wanting to bash his opponent up.'
Nelson believes that Feld has the potential to beoneofhis mostsuccessfulstudentsand is hoping that a bright future in the sport lies ahead for him.
He said: 'Feld has all the attributes to go right to the top if he wants it. He could even branch out into acting, appearing in action roles in kung fu movies. The world's his oyster when it comes to martial arts.'
Feld has numerous honours domestically with wins at the Welsh Open, British Open and Inter-Club Championships.
