ANGLING: MARK Mealing was the high-flyer in Saturday's Airbus, Broughton AC charity match at Lloyd's Meadow Fishery.

He finished with a net of carp and bream weighing 69lbs, which was enough to win from Bob Thelwell who had 63lbs, ahead of Andy Amos with 51lbs. The match raised £1,000 for the National Children's Homes charity.

The second match in the Wirral Winter League was held on Sunday on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burscough where Brian Woods, of Willaston Red, landed 8-2-0 of bream and roach.

Mark Wall, of Dick Cleggs, had 4-4-8 of roach with Keith Cummings, of Birkenhead Centre A, third with 3-8-0 of roach and perch. Birken-head Centre A were the team winners with 49 points from Willaston Red on 45 and Dick Cleggs on 43.

Willaston Red lead the league with 92 points from Birkenhead Centre A on 90 and Dick Cleggs on 89.

Paul Spencer easily won the Egerton Arms AC match on the Severn at Monkmoor with 6-10-0 of chub, including a 3-9-0 fish with Phil Dawson second with a 3-8-0 barbel in his 3-11-0 and Bernard Green third with 0-4-8.

The Peter Westwater Cup was up for grabs in the Ermine AC match on the marina length of the Weaver and it went to Steven Bridson, thanks to 18-3-12 of roach and perch. Kevin Thornton had a similar net weighing 17-6-0 with Roy Price third with 14-7-0.

Several members of Wirral Gamefishers have landed some good-sized salmon. David Owen, of Burton, lured fish of 8lbs and 6lbs from club waters on the lower Dee using shrimp; Mike Penney, of Heswall, coaxed fish of 5-8-0 and 5-4-0 on the same water with a toby spinner; Keith Adamson, of Chester, netted a 10lbs fish from the same venue and Chris White, of Guilden Sutton, landed fish of 10lbs, 8lbs and 7lbs from the river Lledr, a tributary of the river Conwy, using a spinner.

The Railway, Barrow AC fished their first friendly challenge match against Wem AC on the Severn at Gravel Hill, and they provided the top three. Alf Lewis led with a 6-6-0 barbel, Bob Ruscoe had a 5lbs mixture and Alan Dodd landed a 3-12-0 mix.

Victory in the Cestrian AC match on the National length of the Weaver went to Mark Ashton with 8-12-0 of roach, ahead of John Tyreman's 7-10-0 of roach and Alan Heaney with 6-9-0.

Steve Furfie landed top spot in the Helsby Sports and Social Club AC match on the BICC factory pools with 7-8-0 of small fish. Geoff McCalmont was next with a 7-3-0 mixture and Geoff Maguire third with 4-1-0 of roach and skimmers.

Paul Stockton made sure of his Christmas dinner by winning the Tarporley AC feathers match at Little Mill pool, Cotebrook, with a rudd-based 13-4-0. Paul Roden had 8-6-0 and Bill Cross 6-3-0.

Milton Green Fishery was the venue for the Greyhound, Saughall AC Winter League match won by Steve Taylor with 33-10-0 of carp, ahead of Paul Renshaw's 22-8-0 and Paul Dimmock's carp-based 19-10-0.

Janet Williams was top of only two weighers in the Grosvenor Estates AC match on a private brook on the Eaton Estate. A mixture of small dace and chub weighing 1-4-9 put her clear of Norman Cadman's 0-8-0.

Matt Hartley was the leader in the Airbus, Broughton Flyfishers' match from boats at Llyn Brenig with six rainbows weighing 11-1-0, all taken with an orange booby. Lee Green had six for 9-13-0 and Len Rivett landed five fish weighing 7-12-0.

Mickle Trafford AC fished for the Pioneer Cup in the doubles match at Craiglwyd Fisher at Penmaenmawr.

The winning duo were Alan Bell and Arthur Gillman with a brace of rainbows each for a total of 18-11-0, all taken with a black fritz lure. Runners-up were Billy Moore and Alan Edwards, each with a brace of fish for a total of 16-14-0. Next were Mark Haig and John McHugh with 15lbs.

Geoff Watkins took the honours in the Lav -ister AC match on the Dee at Holt with 6-8-0 of small dace, roach and chub. Adrian Piggott had 6-6-0 and Phil Rose 0-14-0.

Castrol SAS members went to Port Dinorwic, dropping anchor in the Menai Straits where Tony Kelly landed 18 bass up to 5lbs. Mal Todd was next with a 6lbs bass and Colin Bowler weighed in a 5-8-0 bass.

Peter Clay was a clear winner of the Blacon Social Club AC match on the Severn at Monk-moor with a 5lbs barbel and a 4-2-0 chub in his 12-6-0 total. Mark Davies took 2-13-0 of small fish for second place and Michael Coleclough was third with 2-10-0.

Malpas AC chose home waters for their match, which was won by Keith Arrowsmith with 2-6-0 of roach, from Cyril Roberts' 1-6-0 and Alan Jones' 1-1-0.

Cheshire Police AC's team was second of 14 in the Police open match at Meadow View Fishery. Top was Mark Greasley, who won his section with 8lbs of carp, supported by Ron White with 10lbs, Steve Derbyshire with 24lbs and Alan Roberts with 14-8-0.

Mick Woods was top rod in the Burton Mere Fishery midweek open with 21-14-0 of bream and roach, beating Tommy Ward with 18lbs of bream and Geoff Grantham with 15lbs of bream.

The Sunday match went to Len Redman with a carp-based 35-12-8, ahead of Mick Woods' 32-11-0 and Simon Waller's 32-3-0.

Ian Jones collected first place in the Royal Mail, Chester AC match on the Red Lion length of the Weaver with 6-10-0 of roach and perch. Vic Speed had 6-0-8 of roach and Stan Williams took 5-3-0 of roach.

Jimmy Crimes won the Rivacre AC match on the meadow island length of the Weaver with 9-2-0 of roach, and drew the golden peg to win £92 towards a total pay-out of £125. Second was Dave Grimes with 8-3-0 of roach from Dougie Walsh with 7-2-0 of roach.

Jeff Williams took 16lbs of roach to win the Rake and Pikel AC match on the marina length of the Weaver, beating Dave Stewart's 12lbs and Dave Spencer's 6-15-0.

Cheshire Police Flyfishers cast their lines for the last time this year on the Draycote reservoir near Rugby.

Tom Fitzpatrick won with eight rainbows weighing 19-10-0, including a fish of 5-10-0, all taken with a black and green lure. Second was Dave Allen with eight fish for 15-6-0 and Peter Hindle had six fish for 12lbs.

FISHERIES NEWS Dearnford Hall: John Carter, of Ellesmere Port, fished a gold-headed damsel fly nymph to take an 8-4-0 rainbow; John Adams, of Frod-sham, coaxed 28 fish, the best a 6-11-0 rainbow using epoxy buzzers, and Alan Morris, of Chester, tempted a 5-1-0 brownie to a black epoxy buzzer.

Meadow: Richard Evans, of Saughall, tempted a 4lbs rainbow to a lure.

Lake Hill: Neston's Bill Eustace lured a 7-8-0 rainbow to ledgered worm and Eddie Williams used similar bait to take a 6-8-0 rainbow.

Llandegla: Gary Chang, of Wirral, tempted an 8lbs rainbow to a golden fritz.
