Talented athletes from Helsby High School were in impressive form as they qualified for the English Schools Athletic Association Track and Field Cup finals.
The junior boys squad from Year 8 and Year 9 won the North West regional competition by 27 points at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena to book their place at the national finals in Bedford on Saturday.
Each athlete had to do a track event and a field event to gain points for the team. At the halfway stage after the track events the Helsby boys were leading, averaging an impressive 19 points in each event.
However, they still had to score highly in the field events to earn their place in the national finals, with only one team guaranteed to go through.
After some great throwing, running and jumping Helsby came out on top to eventually win with 450 points, averaging 18 points per event.
A school spokesperson said: “It was a fabulous team performance as everyone hit the targets that they had set themselves to achieve this great goal.
“Morale is high as they look forward to the national finals at the Bedford Stadium where they hope to go even better and score in the region of 500 points to compete with the best schools in England.”
Helsby pupil Jacob Birtles won the Junior Boys 800m at the Cheshire Schools Track and Field Championships and has qualified to run in The ESAA National Championships on July 10 and 11 at the International Stadium in Gateshead.
