VAUXHALL boss Alvin McDonald gave some of his fringe squad a chance in the League Cup group match last night, so there were plenty of determined performances from hungry players.
UniBond Division One side Trafford started brightly and Lee Wilkinson flashed a shot just wide after a defensive mix-up between Matt Haddrell and Phil Brazier.
But the Motormen went ahead on 18 minutes when Stuart Wright's corner from the right-hand side was flicked on by Haddrell and headed into the net by Liam Croxton.
Vauxhall began to run the show and missed two golden opportunities to extend their lead in less than a minute.
Jon Stanhope played a neat one-two with Robbie Lawton but his flicked shot was blocked and when he and Terry Fearns both went for the same ball from Wright's cross, it was a case of too many cooks.
The Motormen continued to have the upper hand but Trafford always posed a threat with their long-range shooting, although stand-in keeper Steve Hilton looked comfortable with everything they threw at him.
Vauxhall added a second on 57 minutes when Stanhope jinked past Billy McCartney and threaded the ball through to Fearns, who dummied keeper Mark Molyneaux before firing home.
The goal seemed to shake the hosts into a revival and Wilkinson's shot on the turn hit Hilton's right-hand post, but the Motormen restricted them to efforts from outside the area and held firm.
Manager Alvin McDonald said: 'I'm delighted with our first clean sheet. I gave some of the other lads their chance and they were playing for a shirt on Saturday. I hope we can get a few extra supporters in from around the area to boost the crowd for the FA Cup game.'
Vauxhall: Hilton, Cullen, McDermott, Brazier, Haddrell, Lynch, Croxton, Lawton (Cumiskey 82), Fearns, Stanhope, Wright.
* After Saturday's FA Cup tie with Hyde United at Rivacre Park, Vauxhall travel to Macclesfield Town for a Cheshire Senior Cup tie on Tuesday.
