Vauxhall Motors 1 Nuneaton Town 2
THE Motormen were on the receiving end of a smash-and-grab raid by Nuneaton on Saturday.
The hosts dominated for long periods and missed several chances, especially in the first half. But Nuneaton bagged two goals in the final 15 minutes to overturn a one-goal deficit and collect all three points.
Vauxhall captain Josh Wilson should have had a hat-trick in the first half.
His first chance came after 22 minutes when Dave Mannix whipped the ball into the area and Wilson headed straight at Nuneaton keeper Neil Collett.
On 30 minutes, tricky winger Sean Williams caused havoc on the right before delivering a teasing ball into the box which Wilson blazed over from 10 yards.
Just five minutes before the interval, that man Wilson weaved his way into the penalty area on the left, only to see his shot saved by Collett.
Wilson, however, made no mistake on 55 minutes when he netted a penalty – his fifth goal of the season – after Mark Albrighton had handled the ball in the area.
But Motors were stunned late on when a rare Borough attack on 76 minutes saw Lee Smith make it 1-1.
The visitors’ comeback was completed four minutes later when the home side failed to clear their lines from a corner and Gareth Dean fired home from eight yards.
In the dying seconds, Collett denied Leighton McGivern an equaliser with the save of the game.
Vauxhall: Tynan, Taylor (Nethercote 82), Dames, Hannigan (Bennett 90), Jones, Beck, Mahon, Mannix, McGivern, Wilson, Williams (Grocott 70). Subs: Murphy, O’Connell. Attendance: 239.
Motors have signed experienced centre-back Paul Jones from Altrincham.
Liverpool-born Jones, 33, began his career with Tranmere Rovers but failed to make any first-team appearances. He went on to play for Barrow (two spells), Leigh RMI, Oldham Athletic and Hyde United.
He signed for Altrincham in the summer but was released last week after seven appearances.
The Motormen are away to FC Halifax Town this Saturday (3pm). They host Harrogate Town next Tuesday (7.45pm).
