THERE were mixed fortunes for the town’s two teams in the Pyke Cup on Saturday.

Ellesmere Port were beaten 5-3 in extra time at Newton. Dean Numm, Haydn Cooper and Nathan Eccleston had scored for the Port.

But Vauxhall Motors Reserves enjoyed a smooth passage into the second round. They triumphed 3-0 against Marine Reserves, their goals coming from Jason Renshaw, Chris Banasko and Marcus James.

In the West Cheshire League, mid-table Willaston claimed a 1-1 draw at Maghull Reserves in Division Two. Peter Rutter got their goal.

Willaston are level on points with local rivals Capenhurst Villa, who claimed a 2-1 victory at Richmond Raith Rovers thanks to goals by Phil Strapp and Iain Forster.

In Division Thee, Ricky Neale scored a netted a consolation goal for Ellesmere Port Reserves in their 8-1 loss to Gateacre. Neston Nomads won 4-2 at Chester Nomads Reserves and Capenhurst Villa Reserves went down 2-1 at home to Belfry.

Ellesmere Port Town Ladies continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 4-1 victory against Stockport County Yellows. The Port took the lead through a penalty from skipper Lydia Ward, then increased their advantage with strikes from Toni Livens and a long range effort from Kerry Brown. Livens sealed the win in the second half for Port, whose star player was centre-back Katie Priest.
