ATHLETICS: VALE Royal AC, which has a reputation for producing middle-distance runners and is now nurturing some promising sprinters, has turned its youngest members into allrounders.
For 10 weeks it put its Under 11 age-group athletes through a new scheme called Northwich Shine Awards.
The athletes have been taking part in 10 sporting events designed to test their abilities in different athletic disciplines including speed bounce, standing long jump, high stepper, high jump, javelin throw, target throw as well as triple jump and running events.
Coach Neil Templeman said: 'The good thing about these awards is that each athlete found something they were good at and, in some cases, good at several events.
'We want athletes of this age to try out as many events as possible so when they get older and specialise they will focus better.'
Each athlete received three certificates for the triathlon, pentathlon and the decathlon as well as a medal for their efforts.
