Jon McCarthy thinks the effectiveness of the 4-4-2 formation employed at the weekend could see it used more often.

Steve Burr has operated with one centre forward for most of the season but paired Craig Hobson and Oliver McBurnie together in the 3-1 defeat of Dover Athletic.

Although the manager is a believer that players and not systems win matches, he will want to redress the balance in his squad, which has been light on strikers and short of a central midfielder, over the summer.

If he brings in the players he wants then first team coach McCarthy, who played under Burr at Hucknall Town and Northwich Victoria, would not be surprised to see a more permanent switch to two up front.

“I played in a four across midfield a lot and the gaffer likes to have two centre forwards but it can be difficult nowadays,” said McCarthy.

“If you want to play with two in the middle of midfield then you need a certain type of player who will dominate so it’s about the players you have available.

“But we’re not afraid of going a little bit more direct and we did that on Saturday because at this stage of the season the pitches, even ours which is one of the best in the league, are firmer and don’t have as much as grass so it’s not easy to play out from the back.”

Hobson, who marked his return to the team with a goal, impressed at the weekend and his performance up top has given the management team something to think about with the 27-year-old out of contract at the end of the season.

McCarthy said: “Hobby has got a lot of good attributes, he’s a good age and we’ve seen what he can do in the games with Southend and Wrexham earlier in the season.

“If he performs like that every week then it makes our minds up for us.

“What we will do is look at the squad and make sure that next season we’ve got better options so that we can play different systems as we need them.”

Hobson was not alone in rediscovering his best form as the Blues, who had collected just two points from six games, won for the first time in a month.

Chester visit Aldershot Town on Saturday (3pm) before completing the season at home to Nuneaton Town on April 25 and McCarthy is hopeful the campaign can end on a positive note.

He said: “It was as if someone flicked the switch back on at the weekend and you do get that sometimes in football

“The gaffer and I look at ourselves and various things and I think the fact we set our targets for the season and reached them early does have a subconscious effect but it was frustrating.

“It’s a good pitch down at Aldershot so that should suit us and I think if we can finish on 61 points that will be real progress. That’ll be 10 more than last season and if we can add another 10 next season then we’ll be there or thereabouts for the play-offs.”
