Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson believes that Oliver McBurnie's performances during his loan spell at Chester FC last season were a factor in him sealing a move to Premier League side Swansea City.

Striker McBurnie, 19, signed for the Swans on Monday night for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year deal at the Liberty Stadium, with his move to Garry Monk's side coming out of the blue.

McBurnie told the Chronicle last month that he would be open to a return to Chester on loan during the forthcoming season if he failed to establish himself with the Bantams first team squad during pre-season.

The Scotland under-19 international will now, however, be looking to make the grade in English football's top flight following his departure from Parkinson's League One outfit.

McBurnie netted five goals in 14 games for Steve Burr's Blues last term and was a revelation during his brief spell, impressing fans with a string of excellent displays that showed maturity beyond his teenage years. And Bantams boss Parkinson was quick to recognise the importance of his Blues spell in securing his Premier League move.

"He went away on loan to Chester in the second half of last season and did really well," Parkinson told Bradford City's official website.

"It certainly isn't easy for a player of his age to impress at Conference level and score goals."

"As well as his time with Chester, he has performed to a good standard for Scotland at U19 level in recent months. In the company of players playing for teams at higher levels, he has acquitted himself well for his national side. "I am sure that has helped to alert Swansea to Oli's potential. We certainly wish him all the very best."

McBurnie came through the ranks at Valley Parade and went on to make 20 appearances for the Yorkshire side, although he failed to find the net for the Bantams. He will become part of a hugely talented Swansea U21 side that includes former Hawarden High School pupil and Flint Town United striker, Ryan Hedges.

McBurnie told the Chronicle last month: "Chester was a brilliant move for me and I can’t believe how much it improved me as a player. I’d say that I learnt more in my time at Chester than at any other time in my career.

“The Conference is a tough league and really brought my game on. I noticed the change after only a few weeks.

“I was fortunate to be able to work under a gaffer like Steve Burr. His teams get the ball down and play a bit and the way we played really suited my style."
