JOE ALLEN is determined to use Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Zenit St Petersburg tonight to force his way back into Brendan Rodgers’ Premier League plans.
The £15million midfielder hasn’t started a top flight match for a month.
However, Allen is expected to feature at the Petrovsky Stadium and is ready to grasp the opportunity.
“I haven’t played that much recently so any chance I get I’ll try to impress as much as I can and stake a claim,” Allen said.
“From my point of view my form hasn’t been great, especially compared to the start of the season. But it’s up to me to change that.
“This is an exciting European fixture and we want to go as far as we can in this competition.
“Everyone was bitterly disappointed after the defeat to West Brom on Monday but we’ve had to refocus.”
Zenit dropped into the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Malaga and AC Milan.
Allen believes Rodgers’ side will have to be at their best if they are going to advance into the last 16.
“It’s one of the toughest draws we could have had,” he said. “They have come out of the Champions League and they are a strong team.
“Zenit are one of the strongest Russian teams and have invested a lot of money. They are a team full of talent and we will have to ensure we’re on top of our game in order to deal with that kind of threat.
“These are the European fixtures that will test you. I haven’t been to Russia to play before so this is a new experience.
“Sometimes these environments are tough to perform in but that is our job as professionals.”
