Liverpool are increasingly confident that Jurgen Klopp will agree to become the club’s new manager.

The Reds officially opened talks with the former Borussia Dortmund boss on Monday - 24 hours after Brendan Rodgers was relieved of his duties following the 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison.

Klopp has indicated his desire to spearhead the club’s revival and Liverpool hope to confirm his appointment by the end of this week, if everything goes to plan he will pen a three-year contract.

Negotiations are being conducted by Ian Ayre with the Liverpool chief executive liaising closely with Boston-based owners John W Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon.

Former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti also came under serious consideration but Klopp has always been Liverpool's No 1 target to succeed Rodgers.

Fenway Sports Group were interested in Klopp back in the summer of 2012 but at that time he informed them he wouldn't be leaving the Bundesliga outfit.

Klopp is set to bring with him two members of his backroom staff from his time at Dortmund - Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz.

As a result assistant boss Sean O'Driscoll and first team coach Gary McAllister are expected to follow Rodgers out of the club.

As it stands both O'Driscoll and McAllister still remain in position and they are scheduled to take training at Melwood on Tuesday for those players who aren't on international duty. However, they know they are on borrowed time.

The appeal for FSG of securing the services of Klopp is clear. The 48-year-old German transformed Dortmund into one of the most exciting teams in Europe as they won back to back Bundesliga titles and reached the 2013 Champions League final.

The charismatic coach breathed new life into the team which had lost its way and FSG believe he can repeat the trick at Anfield. Klopp has been out of management since he stepped down in May but has made it known in recent weeks that he’s ready to cut short his sabbatical.

Former Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg believes his close friend is ideally suited to Liverpool.

“He gave me this answer a couple of weeks ago. He said: ‘I’m ready for a team that’s not on the highest level, to create something, to build something up’. This could be Liverpool, right?” he said.

“Liverpool is one of the greatest atmospheres. It’s pretty much the same as Dortmund. The fans stay with everything behind the club and this is what Jurgen Klopp likes and what he needs.

“So maybe, very soon, we’ll hear something from Jurgen Klopp, to make a decision, maybe, for Liverpool.”

Former Reds midfielder Didi Hamann has also backed Klopp to transform the Reds’ fortunes.

“The emotions in Liverpool need to be awakened,” he said.

“The people have lost faith in the team and it is important that someone comes who rouses the people again and gets things going.

“Jurgen Klopp, who lives out his passion and love for the game, would fit wonderfully to Liverpool’s mentality. He would be the ideal solution for me.”

Rodgers, who was under contract until 2018, has flown to Spain for a short holiday before considering his options.

Talks are ongoing over a compensation package with his sacking expected to cost Liverpool around £7million.
