Former Scotland international Chris Iwelumo is the new assistant manager of Chester FC .

Iwelumo, who played 10 games for the Blues and scored one goal during a short spell at the club in 2014, returns to the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium as number two to manager Jon McCarthy after Ian Sharps departed for League One Walsall earlier this month.

Iwelumo, who possesses his coaching badges, enjoyed a fine career as a professional, playing as a striker for the likes of Stoke City, Watford, Charlton Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley.

Having briefly held a role coaching the under-18s at Wolves, Iwelumo will have to balance some of his media commitments with his new role, with the 38-year-old a regular face on Channel 5's Football League show.

Iwelumo, who confirmed his appointment on Twitter, beat off stiff competition for the role as number two at Chester with two coaches with managerial experience in the Football League also considered.

It is hoped that Iwelumo's top-level experience will help bring on a young squad and that he can help the likes of strikers James Alabi and Kane Richards thrive.
