CHESTER CITY last night terminated the contracts of midfield player Jermaine McSporran and youngsters Freddy Potter and Adam Wade by mutual consent.

The terminations mean that City have brought their expenditure beneath the allowable 60% Football League salary-capping level.

Twenty-nine-year-old McSporran signed during the summer, but has failed to make an impact, with his involvement restricted to substitute appearances. He is expected to join Grimsby.

Wade and Potter were products of Chester's youth system and were regulars for the reserves.

In another development, Doncaster midfielder Ricky Ravenhill has joined Grimsby for £5,000. Ravenhill had been on loan at the Deva Stadium, but wasn't allowed to sign for City on a permanent basis, because of the club's wage-capping situation.

Meanwhile, City directors Stephen Vaughan and Tony Allen, along with accountant Paul Murray, had a meeting with the Football League management yesterday regarding the salary-capping ruling.

"The discussions were extremely positive and the management of the league made some extremely pertinent and helpful points. It was an amicable meeting and a number of positive suggestions were made from both sides," said Vaughan.

Tonight Chester entertain Coca-Cola League Two leaders Swindon at the Deva.

The Wiltshire club, who are managed by the former Chelsea player Dennis Wise, boast the Football League's only 100% record and City manager Mark Wright knows that Swindon will provide quite a test.

"Swindon have some quality players, but we know if we play to the best of our ability, we are a match for any team in this division," Wright said.

"Our performances of late have been encouraging and we just have to continue with the good habits we have shown lately."

Swindon are expected to include the former Liverpool midfield player Paul Ince this evening.

Ince signed a 12-month contract with the County Ground club last night.

City are hopeful that two of their injury victims Ashley Westwood and Kevin Sandwith will be available to join the squad.
