Tony Thompson believes he can learn a lot from Jon Worsnop while challenging the Chester FC number one for his place.

Liverpool-born keeper Thompson, who left League Two side Morecambe earlier this month, signed a short-term deal with the Blues this week.

The 22-year-old performed well on trial and the management team consider him a more serious challenger to Worsnop than previous back-up Dylan Forth, who moved on to make room from Thompson.

Although he knows he faces a fight to displace the experienced Worsnop, Thompson is relishing the battle and keen to make the most of his time with Chester.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to it. It's a new start and a fresh start so hopefully I can kick on from here. I really happy with the move to be honest.

"I'll learn from Jon's experience because he's got a lot and hopefully he'll pass that on to me because I'm not the oldest so I've got a lot to learn still but I'm looking forward to challenging him.

"They're a great bunch of lads here and I'm really looking forward to working with them. I spent a week-and-a-half with them and had a laugh and they've welcomed me really nicely.

"They seem confident and the lads seem upbeat and I don't really see why they're struggling from what I've seen.

"I watched them on Tuesday night and I thought they looked really comfortable. It's just one of those things isn't it when you have a little hiccup but I'm sure we can get back on track."

Following back-to-back cup wins, Chester welcome Southport to the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium on Saturday seeking to end a run of three league games without a win.

Thompson, who spent time on loan at Southport last season from Rotherham United, expects a hard-fought and competitive contest.

He said: "I was there last season on a loan spell so I know a few of the lads there and they are a decent club and big rivals as well because it's not too far down the road so it should be good and I can't wait."
