THE latest weapon in Chester FC’s attacking arsenal was so secret manager Neil Young was not even aware of its existence.

Young was taken aback when winger Jimmy McCarthy launched the prodigious long throw that led to Iain Howard’s first-minute opener in the victory at Trafford on Saturday.

But now that he has a rival for Rory Delap in his ranks, the Blues boss is ready to make the most of McCarthy’s missiles.

Young said: “When Jimmy picked the ball up and started making his way back to the side I thought to myself, ‘where is he going?’ So I asked him, but he carried on going and the next second the ball’s in the net.

“The subs sitting on the bench couldn’t see out the dugout so they were all asking who threw it. They thought it must have been a fan!

“It’s something we can work on now that we know. Jimmy doesn’t talk very often – maybe I’ve got to get on to Twitter and Facebook where he’s probably told everyone about it!”

The Trafford match also marked the return of the highly-rated Michael Aspin to Chester’s starting line-up.

The 21-year-old right-back has not lived up to expectations following his transfer from Northwich Victoria, and earlier this season he was sent out on loan to Farnborough.

But Young said: “Hopefully he’s now going to show why we paid money to sign him and why, at 21 years of age, he’s played in the Conference.”
