Former Chester FC boss Neil Young has resigned as manager of Stockport County after seven months in charge.

Young, who won three consecutive league titles during his reign at Chester, stepped down after losing 1-0 to basement side AFC Telford United on the weekend.

County have won once in 12 games, which has seen the club drop to ninth in the National League North, 13 points outside the play-off places.

Forty-year-old Young, who combines his football work with a full-time position at Merseyrail, intimated he might not seek another managerial role.

He said: "I've worked tirelessly since arriving at the club towards the end of May and although after a good start, recent results have not been good enough, I do believe on numerous occasions misfortune has played its part.

"I have another full time job and a young family and after those recent results and in particular Saturday's it has really taken its toll, so I've decided to step down with immediate effect.

"I am extremely proud to have been able to manage two of the biggest clubs in non league football in my managerial career and may now look at a different role within football.

"I believe I am leaving Stockport County with a strong squad of players and in a better place off the field.

"I would like to thank all of my players, my staff who's commitment to me has been unbelievable and the very kind people who work very hard within the football club for their generosity towards me.

"Finally I would like to wish all our supporters and everybody at the football club all the very best for the future."

Young's assistant Gary Jones and chief scout Alex Hay, who both worked with him at Chester, and head of recruitment Carl Garner have left Edgeley Park too.

Prior to being appointed Chester boss in May 2010 , Young achieved promotion with Colwyn Bay.

During his time with the Blues, he guided them to unprecedented success, steering them to three successive league championships and promotions.

However, the fan-owned club struggled in what is now the National League and Young departed in January 2014 after a poor run of results .

Following 14 months out of management, Young was unveiled as Stockport's new boss last May, taking over from former manager Alan Lord who became director of football.

He won his first three league games in charge with County ending the opening month of the season in fourth place but results since have been disappointing.

In a statement, Stockport's board of directors said: "The club would like to thank Neil and his staff for all their hard work over the last seven months and we are all sorry that it hasn't worked out as we hoped."
