Steve Burr said the 1-0  win over Macclesfield Town was a reward for the supporters after two painful home defeats.

Prior to the game, the manager had stressed the need to produce a result and a performance that would give the fans for optimism.

His side responded with a spirited and committed 90 minutes that ended with a deserved three points and a first home win of the season.

John Rooney's superb free kick on 14 minutes decided the all-Cheshire clash and Macc, who lost for the first time in seven games, could have no complaints about the result.

"I felt there was a lot of good signs last week at Gateshead and we've moved on again from that," said Burr.

"I was just pleased for the lads and most importantly pleased for the supporters. The support was terrific as it has been all season and like them I'll have a good weekend.

"I wouldn't say we were hanging on at the end, but with the two performances we've had here prior to this one, it was just important that we got a win for these fans.

"I think last week at Gateshead, who are a good outfit and an established Conference club, a bit of anxiety came into it with us being 1-0 up and we couldn't really handle that and I never really felt that this week.

"Macc haven't lost yet so they've had a good start and its something that will give us a lot of confidence. I thought we should have perhaps had more goals but it's 1-0, three points and something to build on and we're just happy to get the win."

Burr was delighted with the atmosphere inside the Swansway Chester Stadium and felt the support from the terraces helped his side hold on for the win under some late Macclesfield pressure.

He said: "It means a lot and we've served up two poor games for the home fans this season and it's not nice coming off when you haven't played well and you haven't contributed, and it's always important to me not just to win games but how you go about it.

"We've seen here how passionate the fans are for the team doing well and I spoke about that to the lads before the game and in the last five minutes they got us over the line."

Burr reserved praise for recalled centre back Kieran Charnock, who gave a stand-out performance as the Blues kept a clean sheet for the first time this season.

"I had a chat with Kieran before the game to say look it's an opportunity for you to stake your claim and show people what you're about and that's how I remember him when I had him six or seven years ago," said Burr.

"If you get a clean sheet then you don't lose matches but it was pleasing again that we created a number of chances that I felt we could have done a little bit better with."

Chester entertain Torquay United, relegated from the Football League at the end of last season, on Tuesday (7.45pm).
