Luke George is proud to be wearing the captain’s armband and looking forward to leading his Chester FC team into battle against his former club this weekend.

The 23-year-old took over from Ian Sharps, who remains club captain, as skipper this month after manager Steve Burr was impressed with his leadership qualities.

George stresses there are no issues between him and Sharps over him taking on the armband and the midfielder is honoured to have been given the role, which he will continue against Southport on Saturday (3pm).

"It’s a brilliant feeling to captain the side and I’ve always said it’s something I enjoy doing," said George.

"It’s something I see myself as in the future as obviously the older I get the more experience I get. They’re a great bunch of lads to work with and it’s something I want to do.

"I think it was a little bit of a surprise. Sharpy’s been skipper since the start of the season so it wasn’t something I was expecting but the lads are easy to work with and Ian’s a top professional.

"He spoke to me before the Aldershot game and there’s nothing between us or anything like that. If anything Ian’s there to pass his advice onto me."

Liverpool-born George had plenty of suitors when he decided to leave Southport, where he made more than 80 appearances in two seasons, in the summer but opted to pen a 12-month deal with the Blues .

He was sidelined for Chester’s win at Haig Avenue in October so this weekend’s game will be the first time he has lined up against the Sandgrounders, who have taken 22 points from a possible 27 since Dino Maamria replaced ex-Chester City skipper Paul Carden as manager.

Although the Blues have won from nine in the league, George believes back-to-back wins over Hungerford Town in the FA Trophy and Hyde United in the Cheshire Senior Cup means the squad should be heading into the game targeting three points, which could take them back above Southport in the National League table.

"It’s all about confidence and I’ve always said that," said George.

"The lads have stayed positive and after the win on Saturday we can take that into the Southport game.

"I’m expecting a decent crowd and obviously it’s my old club so there’s mixed feelings for me there as well but it’s something I’m looking forward to."
