Chester FC manager Jon McCarthy has lined up a loan swoop for a promising goalkeeper from a Football League club.

The Blues have reached an agreement with a League One side for the keeper to move to the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium on a season-long deal, The Chronicle understands.

The deal could be completed and announced before the end of the week.

McCarthy has high hopes for the unnamed shot-stopper, who has gained previous first-team experience during loan spells with non-league clubs.

The move will be McCarthy's first signing of the summer although the 45-year-old has tied up new deals with Ryan Astles, Luke George, Kane Richards, James Alabi and Jordan Chapell.

The keeper will contest the number one spot with Jon Worsnop, who has another 12 months on his contract.

Worsnop, 33, began the 2015-16 as first choice but lost his place in February to Tony Thompson, who started 12 of the last 15 games.

Thompson, who arrived in January on a short-team deal after leaving Morecambe , is out of contract and the loan swoop leaves the 21-year-old's future in doubt.

Liverpool-born Thompson showed up well in his appearances but budget constraints mean the Blues are unlikely to be able to afford to keep him and Worsnop with both wanting first-team football.
