With a population about half that of Hoole and average gates of less than 150, some might consider Hungerford Town the David to Chester FC's Goliath.

But given the talent and experience in the Crusaders’ ranks, that is a dangerous assumption.

The Blues are favourites to reach the third round but Hungerford’s underdog status will not concern manager Bobby Wilkinson or his squad.

Ahead of this weekend’s game, The Chronicle looks at the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division side in more detail:

Form guide

Last weekend’s late 1-0 defeat at Dunstable Town ended Hungerford’s 13-game unbeaten run. The Crusaders currently find themselves one place outside the play-offs in sixth spot after 11 wins, nine draws and six defeats in 26 league games.

Nathaniel Jarvis leads the club’s scoring charts with 14 goals but has drawn a blank in his last two games.

Hungerford beat Banbury United, St Neots Town, Thamesmead Town and Corinthian Casuals to reach this stage of the competition.

How will the Blues get on against Hungerford Town?

The manager

Bobby Wilkinson has been at the helm since May 2010 having previously managed Milton United.

As a player, Wilkinson was on the books of Reading but injuries forced him to retire at a young age and he moved on to the backroom staff.

His time at Bulpit Lane has been a great success and he led the club to promotion through the Southern South & West play-offs in 2012-13 and took them to the Southern Premier play-offs last term.

Wilkinson signed a new two-year deal in December with the aim of taking the club into the National League.

One to watch

Alan O’Brien has been with the Crusaders since 2012 and, despite being 30 years old, retains electric pace.

He started his career at Newcastle United, where he made a handful of first-team appearances, before spending two years at Hibernian.

After spells at Swindon Town and Yeovil Town, the Dubliner – who won five caps for Republic of Ireland – dropped into non-league.

Although he has been struggling for fitness, O’Brien remains a real threat on the flank and a potential match-winner.

Famous face

Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin was born in Hungerford and played for the Crusaders, as did his father Fred.

Austin moved to Poole Town in 2008 and his prolific form earned him a trial with Swindon Town.

The Robins were impressed enough to sign the forward whose goalscoring record for Swindon, Burnley and QPR led to a call-up for the England squad and Premier League clubs are reported to be interested in him.
