Ian Sharps reckons Chester FC can use their frustration at failing to beat Altrincham as motivation against Aldershot Town this weekend.

Despite being on top for most of the game and taking the lead through in-form striker Ross Hannah, the Blues had to make do with a 1-1 draw when Michael Rankine took advantage of a mistake to equalise for the Robins.

Chester skipper Sharps told The Chronicle following the game he felt the performance was a 'step in the right direction' but admitted it was a disappointing result.

Now the 35-year-old defender, who arrived on a free transfer in the summer after leaving Burton Albion, wants to use that disappointment as ammunition to beat Aldershot on Saturday (3pm).

"Maybe we can take that frustration into the next game and use it to push us on," said Sharps.

"Of course you look at the league table as a player and it's not pretty reading at the moment.

"We want to be higher than we are, we're capable of being higher than we are and that's part of the frustration I think.

"The gaffer knows that we should have won the game with Altrincham and taken the three points from it but we didn't.

"We can't do anything about that now, we can only go to Aldershot and do something about it."

Warrington-born defender Sharps confirmed manager Steve Burr was in no mood to sympathise with his players following the draw with Altrincham.

Burr criticised his team's lack of killer instinct and Sharps can understand the manager's reasons for being so upset.

"The gaffer wasn't happy with us in the changing room and that's fair enough with me," said the ex-Tranmere Rovers man.

"He wanted to win the game as much as we did and he vented his frustration at us and let us know in no uncertain terms that he wasn't happy but we've got to take that on the chin because he's the gaffer.

"We've got to try and build on what we did on Saturday. Was it a 45 minute performance? Maybe because in the first-half especially we played really well but we've got to do that over the 90.

"The gaffer has told us what he wants us to do. We didn't quite do that in the second-half and we let Altrincham back in the game."
