CHOLMONDELEY took centre stage as rain decimated most the local cricket programme over the weekend.

CD Bramall County League sides Nantwich and Alsager were washed out, and Cheshire Alliance teams Wistaston, Sandbach, Audlem and Aston also fell victim to the weather.

But Meller Braggins League Division One leaders Cholmondeley are in fine form and, after their match at Oakmere was given the go-ahead, they ensured it was their day with a six-wicket win.

Oakmere opened the batting and reached 99-3 off 31 overs, with Paul Yearsley on 40 before left-armer Ed Mason struck.

Bowling in tandem with Christopher Baker, they restricted the home side to 124-7 as Ben Briscoe, Mason and Baker got two wickets apiece.

In reply Cholmondeley started solidly with Luke Heritage scoring 27.

Briscoe got 25 before he was undone by an exceptional ball, leaving James Cooke (26) and Neil Thompson (5) to close out the game with five balls to spare, making 128-7.

Division Three side Holmes Chapel also saw their game cancelled. nWistaston Village have announced a sponsorship deal which will help finance a new scoreboard at The Brittles.

Grocery distribution and storage firm Boughey Distribution has stepped in to hand a cash boost to the Villagers.

A club spokesman said: 'We are delighted and very grateful to Boughey.'
