CHESTER County Officers pulled off a tremendous home victory over Mere in Meller Braggins League Division Two.
Winning the toss was a great start on a hot day but the CCO batsmen squandered the advantage with some disappointing shots, slumping to 89-5 after 17 overs.
Fortunately, a magnificent 100 partnership between Graham Dodd (74) and Steven Birchall (26) saw Chester raise 200 all out in 44 overs.
After tea, Steve Johnson (3-59) took early wickets to leave the visitors at 48-3.
Ali added an aggressive 53 before being well caught at long-off by Mike Rowlands off Ian Rule.
A magic over by Rowlands (3-23) then resulted in the fall of a further three wickets.
At 140-8 the game was in Chester’s hands, but Mere continued to go for victory. They lost another wicket and were left needing seven runs to win off the last seven balls – but a catch by club chairman Tony Collard saw them all out for 194 (Ian Rule 3-60).
County Officers host The Groves in the Twenty20 Cheshire League Cup tomorrow.
They overcame Barrow last week, posting 194-2 before restricting their opponents to 75-6.
