ALVANLEY played host to County League Division Two leaders Middlewich on Saturday – and dodged the showers to claim an incredible draw.
The covers were peeled back to revel a damp track which Alvanley were invited to bat first on.
Despite its green appearance, Steve Chrales and Andy Bennion looked assured with 22 runs flowing off the first four overs.
Charles followed soon after, but Mark Szymura kept up the air of control, taking the score to 39 before Bennion found the bowler on his follow through for 22.
Szymura (47) was joined by Chris Jones (19) and with fading light and occasional squally showers, life got tougher for batsmen.
Alvanley had reached 90-2 at the halfway stage but they then fell away, adding only 29 runs as they were bowled out for 119.
The Middlewich innings was a thriller.
They dipped to 43-4 and 71-8 but managed to secure a draw with 90-9, blocking for the final 18 overs as Alvanley made no fewer than six bowling changes.
