STEPHEN Gayle says he finally has a team he has to work to keep up with!

The Cheshire Jets guard signed for head coach Paul Smiths side in 2008 and has seen many players come and go.

But this bunch have given the 30-year-old, now among the Jets dwindling band of veterans, a new challenge.

We have some strong young guys here this season, he said. They give me a run for my money.

The last few years weve had a couple of older guys and I had to slow down and keep pace with them a little.

Now I am pushing hard because this young blood is picking up the pace!

Gayle has played a bit-part so far this season but it has been vital to the Jets success.

With Jeremy Bell taking the starting guard spot, Smith has once more called on Gayle from the bench this term.

But he has had the Midas touch. While his stats may not compete with the big boys, it is his actions coming into the game as the tide has turned against the Jets or if there is a lull that have brought the Jets back to life.

Gayle has been hitting some great shots from deep and has also set an example in defence but the Mancunian is not satisfied.

I wouldnt say I was in the best form of my life but I am in great form because I am being pushed and you have to step up to the mark, he said.

Im hitting my shots, and my shot feels really good but its about the team and doing your job right.

The guys are working on hitting the boards and its exciting to see how we play now.

With Newcastle Eagles coming up at the Northgate on Sunday (5.30pm tip-off), Gayle is well aware that despite their good form to date, the Jets have to be on their guard.

He was a part of the Jets team who were picked apart in last seasons BBL Trophy final but he has also seen the Jets beat the Eagles enough to know what is required on Sunday.

The Eagles are a running side, he said. If you let them run at you they will be all over you.

We are young, strong and fit and we have to take the game to them and not give them the freedom.
