The lure of folk lore

HUNDREDS of folk fans will descend on Nantwich for a major musical event.

HUNDREDS of folk fans will descend on Nantwich for a major musical event.

The Folk and Roots Festival over the weekend will bring musicians and dancers from all over the world to perform in the historic town centre and pubs.

Traders will reap the benefits of a massive influx of visitors and hotels and pubs are expected to do a roaring trade.

Although the Folk and Roots festival is part of the borough s Festival and Carnival proceedings over the next 10 days, the Folk Festival is a separate project, with organisers working throughout the year.

For the past few years, much of action has centred on a marquee on Mill Island, but the island will not be used this year because when arrangements were being made foot and mouth disease restrictions were still in place.

So this year the marquee will be in the White Horse pub car park in Pillory Street.

There will also be non-stop music at other pubs including the Red C o w, Black Lion and Frog and Ferrett, and a Friday night concert in the Civic Hall featuring folk guitar legend Martin Carthy and his vocalist wife Norma Waterson, who formed The Watersons in the early 60s.

Festival spokeswoman Claire Smith said: 'We are lucky to have two of the biggest names in English folk.'

Other names include Nancy Kerr, James Fagan and Tim van Eyken, and the superb Shannon Irish Dancers.

Saturday night's festival marquee hosts more acts, with Australian outfit Stiff Gins, Cheshire band Full House and Crewe s own Tower Struck Down.

On Sunday afternoon, the marquee will host youngsters Dulaman, the legendary Snakey Jake s Skunk band and Gary O'Dea's Gentleman Bandits who will round the weekend off in true style.

It is certainly a full programme of events for all ages including work -shops, craft stalls, dancing street entertainment and events in Nantwich famous and historic pubs.
