Chester is one of the spookiest places for a weekend away, according to the online travel company Expedia.
A ghost of a little girl at the Queen Hotel on Station Road puts the Best Western Premier hotel in the top five places you might hear things that go bump in the night.
The first grand railway hotel to be built in the UK in 1860, the Queen Hotel has long been haunted by a host of supernatural beings.
Many have reported unusual goings-on in an area on the second floor thought to have once been a nursery.
Female guests have told of a little girl who sneaks up on them as they fill up the tub in the en-suite bathrooms. She’s even been known to pull their hair before pedalling off on her tricycle.

The Langham Hotel, London
Built in 1865 and known as the first Grand Hotel in Europe, The Langham Hotel is reportedly frequented by many ghosts. According to legend, one such ghost is that of a doctor, rumoured to have killed himself after murdering his bride while they honeymooned in the hotel. Other guests have reported sightings of a man in military attire standing by a window on the fourth floor - this is said to be the ghost of a German Prince who jumped out of a window before the start of the First World War.
Ettington Park Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon
Used as the location for 1963 film ‘The Haunting’, the hotel has many ghost stories of its own. A servant girl called Mary who died after a fall at the property has been seen many times around the house, while two children who drowned in the Stour River in 1800 haunt the hallways.
The Swan Hotel, Suffolk
The Swan Hotel was once a thriving coaching inn and apparently the spirit of a former housekeeper still walks the premise. She is said to have committed suicide in room 15 of the hotel, which was once the housekeeping quarters. Today, several guests staying in this room have reported seeing her standing over them middle of the night – do you dare turn off the lights?
The Schooner Hotel, Northumberland
This 17th century coaching inn is not for the faint-hearted. The Poltergeist Society has named it the Most Haunted Hotel in Great Britain twice, so don’t expect to get much sleep. There have been more than 3,000 reported spooky sightings over the last few years alone and over 60 individual spirits identified at the property.
Dalhousie Castle, Edinburgh
Known to have been visited by King Edward I and Oliver Cromwell, the resident ghost at the castle is thought to belong to Lady Catherine, a mistress to a former owner of the house in the 16th century. When the affair became apparent to the owner’s wife, she imprisoned Catherine in an upstairs chamber where she starved to death and her lovesick ghost now walks the grounds.
