POLICE investigating the death of a man found in a walkway in Oswestry today named him as Joseph Hayward, aged 50, of Laburnham Drive, Oswestry.
A post mortem examination conducted by Home Office pathologist Dr Eddie Tapp showed he died as a result of head injuries.
Mr Hayward was found by a member of the public at around 1am on Saturday. Police received a call at 1.10am from Shropshire Ambulance Service saying they were attending a man in a walkway at Coney Green, running alongside Sainsbury’s between Brookhouse Road and Blackgate Street.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A local man in his twenties was arrested late on Saturday night and remains in custody at Shrewsbury.
Detective Inspector Jason Wells, the deputy senior investigating officer, said an application would be made to Shrewsbury magistrates this morning for a 36-hour detention extension to enable further questioning.
Police have renewed appeals for information, especially from anyone who saw or heard anything in the Coney Green area early on Saturday, possibly linked to the death. The number to call is 08457 444888.
