A little girl from Frodsham has been nominated for Young Champion in the Trinity Mirror Cheshire/ScottishPower Your Champions Awards 2014.
Sophie Taylor, 10, went the extra mile for Mother’s Day this year when she undertook a sponsored climb of the Eiffel Tower to raise money for a charity which supports women afflicted with the same condition her beloved mum suffered from during both of her pregnancies.
Sophie spent her tenth birthday climbing the iconic landmark’s 704 steps to the second platform to highlight intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), which increases the risks of premature labour, foetal distress and stillbirth, and is typified by intense itching without the presence of a rash.
The thoughtful youngster decided she’d prefer to take on a challenge in aid of ICP Support – which helped her mum through her experiences with the condition – than have a birthday party, after being inspired by a CBBC programme in which a young girl completed a sponsored climb for charity.
Sophie, who was grateful to everyone who helped her raise 375, said: “It felt amazing to do the climb for charity.”
Sophie’s proud mum Kelly Taylor said: “It’s been a fantastic opportunity for Sophie to take on this challenge.
“She enjoyed every aspect of the journey, from the planning, to the climb itself and of course being able to help raise awareness of ICP, as well as raise a significant amount of sponsorship for the charity.
“She was aware of some complications I had during both pregnancies and, although she didn’t know the name of the condition or the charity, she said that she wanted to climb for the charity that helped her and her little brother arrive safely.”
Founder of ICP Support Jenny Chambers was full of praise for Sophie’s fundraising endeavour.
“If she ever has children she too may develop the condition, so it’s vital that by then doctors have clearer guidelines on how to treat and manage the condition. Sophie’s support may make all the difference to any pregnancy care she may need in the future.”
