The University of Chester’s cheerleading team are top of their game.

The team has been crowned the UK University Ultimate Cheerleading Champions, at Europe’s largest cheerleading competition.

The Chester Vixens back-flipped their way to the title at the annual Future Cheer event in Birmingham, in which they competed against university squads from around the country.

Members of the squad have been preparing for the competition since last October, training at least three times a week to perfect their routines and build up their strength.

The Chester Vixens entered three teams into the competition – pom, stunt and cheer, who all performed to 2,000 spectators and a panel of international judges.

The cheer team were placed first in their category, while the newly-formed stunt team came third and the pom team came fifth.

The collective results meant that the Chester Vixens scored highest out of all the universities overall, resulting in them collecting the Level 1 grand champions title.

The grand champions from all levels then competed against each other to fight for the ultimate champions title.

Chester Vixens came out on top, and were crowned UK University Ultimate Cheer Champions 2016.

Club captain of the Chester Vixens Emma Griffiths said: “I am so proud of all three teams that competed last weekend, but I’m especially proud of our cheer team.

“So much time and effort went into their amazing routine, and to ensure that they executed every detail and stunt perfectly. We will continue to work extra hard and look forward to competing at our next competition at the British Cheerleading Association National Universities competition in Telford, later this month.”

Chester Students’ Union’s vice-president (Activities) Ethan Wade added: “We are delighted with the results from the Future Cheer competition and very proud of our cheerleaders. All our sports and societies work hard to compete in competitions and this year they are bringing back more trophies than ever before.”
