ONE of the finest medal collections in British football was auctioned off in Chester yesterday.

Liverpool FC legend Tommy Smith, 66, was at Bonhams’ Christleton Road saleroom to see 75 prized lots from his glittering playing career go under the hammer.

The collection of medals, caps, framed shirts and signed photographs was expected to generate in the region of £120,000 for the man known as the ‘Anfield Iron’.

Other items due to go under the hammer in yesterday’s sporting memorabilia sale included an Argentina shirt worn by the great Diego Maradona in his final international appearance in 1994.

There were also 52 lots consigned by Alex Best, wife of the late George Best.
