Forty members of staff at Marks & Spencer’s flagship destination superstore at Cheshire Oaks have been left without jobs as their fixed term contracts have expired.

One of the upset workers who does not wish to be named, contacted The Pioneer this week and said morale is ‘extremely low’ at the superstore.

“Many of the staff members have been on fixed term contracts ever since the store opened nearly two years ago, and these contracts kept on getting renewed,” she said.

“But all of a sudden we’ve been told they won’t be renewed – leaving 40 of us without jobs.”

She added: “We were told there were 17 jobs we could apply for but they were only for short contracts too.

“It’s left morale in the store extremely low and in my opinion, they are going to be very understaffed.”

A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer said: “We take on temps on fixed term contracts usually for exceptionally busy periods and these naturally come to an end.

“It is standard procedure.”
