Comedian Paul O’Grady has claimed the Countess of Chester Hospital failed to treat his sister because it was a weekend during an on-stage rant about Government cuts.

The Birkenhead-born TV star said his 74-year-old sister Sheila Rudd was rushed into hospital after suffering a heart attack on a Friday but was not seen by a doctor until the Monday.

His outburst came as he appeared at the Hampstead Theatre Festival in London.

Slamming the Government, Mr O’Grady said: “I’m not blaming that hospital in Chester – but I am blaming the lack of funding.

“I blame this bloody Government. They’re running the NHS down.

“But it was a Friday and no-one saw her till the Monday because it was a weekend.”

The 60-year-old – who has suffered three heart attacks – alleged another patient was brought in with Norovirus and infected the whole ward, causing it to be closed off.

He added: “Sheila’s hard as nails – and we have heart attacks like colds in our family.

“I said to her ‘you lie there and kick off. Remember the family honour. Don’t give them any peace’.”

The Countess of Chester Hospital has been approached for a comment but had not provided a response at the time of publication.
