Police have named the 22-year-old pedestrian who was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle on the M56.

At around 5.46pm on Monday, emergency services were called to the M56 between Hapsford and Runcorn after a man walking on the carriageway was hit by a vehicle.

Jake Johnson, 22, from Frodsham tragically died at the scene.

His family have paid tribute to the 22-year-old, saying:  “He was a son and brother and will be sadly missed.”

Following the collision police issued an urgent appeal for any motorists  who may have witnessed the incident, which saw the carriageway closed between junction 12 and 14 Eastbound for the  duration of the evening.

It was believed a red car swerved to avoid Mr Johnson shortly before he was hit by another vehicle, while he was walking on the carriageway, approximately half a  mile from the Runcorn turn-off  on the Eastbound carriageway.

Motorists experienced  lengthy delays as the carriageway was closed while police  remained at the scene of the  incident, escorting vehicles  trapped within the closed carriageway  from the motorway.

Police continue to urge anyone with any information about the incident should call 101 quoting incident 650 of 6 January 2014.
