ESSENTIAL maintenance work begins on Monday (September 17) on Chester’s Watergate Bridge which will result in it being closed to pedestrians for two weeks where the Walls cross Watergate Street. This will result in night work from September 24 to 27 between 7pm and 10pm when the Watergate, Nuns Road and City Walls junction will be controlled by temporary traffic lights.

Cllr Lynn Riley, executive member for community and environment, said: “Pedestrians will be diverted from the Walls during the two weeks to a safe crossing point at the junction of Nicholas Street and Watergate Street.

“Scaffolding will be in place to secure the masonry balustrade and it will also provide a bridge over the existing structure which can be used by pedestrians until permanent repair work can be carried out.”
