Roadworks at the M56 junction 8 have been extended a further month.

An uncharted water pipe has halted work on the slip road on to the motorway westbound from the A556.

Commuters to and from Chester have had to change their route while construction goes on.

The slip road was supposed to reopen this week, but United Utilities have been given extra time to investigate the pipe.

Highways England project manager Jonathan Stokes said: “We would like to thank drivers for their continued patience as we work to deliver bridge repairs at junction 8.

“This is a crucial element in linking the new A556 route to the M56.

“Unfortunately in these kinds of projects you can come across the unexpected and this pipe has made the bridge repairs more complicated and time-consuming.”

The closures are part of a £192m improvement project on the A556 link road between the M56 and M6.

Work began in November 2014, with the new bypass expected to open in early 2017.

Drivers needing to access the westbound M56 are asked to use junction 6 at Hale or join from the M6 at Lymm Interchange.
