Heavy traffic on the M56 during the Wednesday evening rush hour has cleared.
Commuter congestion was causing delays for motorists eastbound from junction 15, the M53 exchange, through to junction 11 at Preston Brook.
Queues built up at the same time on Tuesday.
A warning was issued because for the first time in six years, both Manchester football teams are playing at home on the same night.
The slip road at junction 12 remains closed for construction work.
Heading in the opposite on the M53 northbound towards Birkenhead, congestion has built up between junctions 11 and 7.
Further afield on the M56, two lanes are closed northbound at junction 21 due to an overturned car.
