Traffic has returned to normal following an earlier accident on the southbound carriageway of the M53 in Wirral on Wednesday morning (December 2) .

One lane had been closed, affecting the motorway between junction four (Bebington) and junction five (A41, Eastham) from about 7.50am but by 9.30am traffic was flowing freely again.

Lane two, of two, was closed heading away from Birkenhead towards Ellesmere Port and Chester causing many people to be late for work. However, all lanes are now reopen.

The level of congestion was earlier described as ’severe’.
