The smallest wine bar in Chester is almost ready to open in Rufus Court.

New artisan wine shop and bar Covino will be able to accommodate just a dozen people at a time when it opens on Friday, December 9.

Covino is being launched by Chester wine merchant Chris Laidler, 27, who has supplied some of the country’s best restaurants and hotels, including several of the city's most popular eateries, such as The Chef’s Table, Sticky Walnut, Joseph Benjamin and Ginger.

After 18 months of planning, Chris decided that the time was right to share his knowledge and love of wine, with work on the site at 10 Rufus Court nearing completion.

He said: “The inspiration for Covino came from visits to some of the best small producers throughout Europe, each showcasing unusual grape varieties and wine from lesser known regions.

“Covino will be my interpretation of an enoteca – a small wine shop and bar format that is popular on the continent – offering great value handcrafted wines in a relaxed intimate atmosphere, alongside a selection of artisan cheeses and charcuterie.

“I always encourage people to try something new and step out of their comfort zone. Covino will offer a mixture of unusual grape varieties from around the world as well as classics with a twist, so there will definitely be something to suit everyone.”

As well as enjoying wine at the bar, Covino will sell wine by the bottle to take away or have delivered to your home.

Covino will also offer a selection of carefully selected small-batch spirits, craft beers and coffees as well as running regular themed tastings and events.
