CHESTER City Council has reopened one of the few doorways through the historic city walls.

The access between the Roman Gardens and Park Street opposite The Albion pub has been closed for the last 12 months because of its uneven pedestrian surface and low headroom.

Work to improve the doorway has been completed and can now be used by the public to get to the Roman Gardens, which are also accessible from the Groves and Little St John’s Street.

Councillor Stuart Parker, Executive Member for Development on Chester City Council, said: “It is excellent news that we have been able to reopen this gate. This demonstrates the city council’s commitment to conserving one our best heritage assets.

“We look forward to starting the repairs on the collapsed section of the city walls this spring.”
