A GROUP of cycling enthusiasts have raised £1,000 for a hospice event.
Members of Westminster Wheelies are in training for the first-ever Chester Bikeathon on Saturday, June 25.
The group - comprising friends and colleagues in Ellesmere Port and further afield - have been meeting regularly to prepare for the 15-mile round-trip.
And up to now they've managed to raise £1,000 in sponsorship from local firms, which is going to the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
Sarah and Steve Buckley, who work at the Westminster Packing Company in Meadow Lane, said: 'Our team manager Joe Gow thought this would be a great idea and, bearing in mind most of us are not the fittest people.
'From our business contacts such as the Yacht pub, whose landlord is now a member of the team, DP Roberts Hughes & Denye Solicitors and Heldens Building Supplies, we have received pledges for a huge amount, and more is still coming in daily.
'It has all become very exciting and we are all enjoying the training, going from pub to pub, but still training.'
Hospice fundraising manager Amanda Le Bretton said: 'We are so delighted the Westminster Wheelies have raised such a wonderful amount in sponsorship.
'And we're glad they are joining us for what will be a really fun day for all the family, incorporating a beautiful off-road cycle route followed by refreshments and live entertainment all afternoon at the University of Chester.'
