A MUGGER who dragged a 71-year-old woman along the ground while trying to steal her handbag has pleaded guilty to continuously raping and sexually assaulting a child.

In March this year Gary Alman, 20, was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution after targeting a pensioner as she walked alone along the canal towpath in Chester, before grabbing her handbag and dragging her along the floor as she refused to let go.

Appearing in Chester Crown Court on Monday, Alman pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual activity with a child, including three counts of rape and two counts of sexually assaulting a child under 11 years old.

The court heard how for six years, Alman sexually assaulted a child, starting by sexually touching her when she was under seven years old before raping her a year later and continuing to abuse her until she was 11.

Alman, who is now 20, was just 12 when he first abused the child when she was between six and seven and he continued assaulting her until two years ago.

Prosecuting, Mark Connor said Alman was already serving time in jail for the attempted robbery, which happened in September last year.

“He was only a child when he committed these offences, he was between the ages of about 12 and 17 years old,” said Mr Connor.

Alman, who will be placed on the Sex Offender’s Register, is due to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court during the week commencing September 3.

In the meantime, he will remain in jail to carry out his sentence for previous offences.
