A rugby player was given moral support from her teammates when she had her shoulder-length hair shaved off for charity.

Sabrina McGill, a founding member of the Chester Devas women’s rugby union team, raised more than £900 for Macmillan Cancer Support by taking part in their ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign.

Sabrina signed up after friends and family members had been affected by cancer and raised the money by getting sponsored by friends, relatives and colleagues.

Members of the Devas provided their support and even gave her a helping hand with the clippers as her locks were shorn off.

Sabrina, who lives in Chester, said: “It was much better than expected and I’m really happy with my new look. People have said that I’m brave for doing it but I don’t think so, the brave ones are those that are facing the prospect of fighting cancer and going through chemo or radiotherapy with no guarantee that their hair will grow back.”

Macmillan provides specialist support to people with cancer and their families.

The estimated fundraising total is £1,000, but there are donations still coming in.
