Arriva Trains Wales plans to install new mobile scanners at Chester Railway Station later this year as it expands the product range available on its mobile app service.

The expansion comes following huge demand with a reported half a million journeys being made since the app’s launch in 2015.

From April 2016 a wide range of Cheap Day, Off Peak, Standard Day, Super Off Peak and Standard Open mTickets have been released through the ATW tickets app to keep up with consumer demand for the need to purchase items on the go via smart phones and tablets, with consumer research showing that the phone has now overtaken the laptop as the most popular device for getting online.

Due to the popularity of the app, the company is also investing £250,000 in the installation of new mobile scanners at key stations across its network, which includes plans to install scanners at Chester Station later this year.

Lynne Milligan, customer services director at Arriva Trains Wales, said: “With more and more people now using smartphones, including 90% of 16-24 year olds and 50% of 55-64 year olds, we were aware of the need to offer more of our tickets on our mobile app.

“There’s now a greater choice of tickets and fares available online to suit our customer’s travel needs than ever before.

“Arriva Trains Wales is one of the first train operating companies in the UK to offer these tickets via its app and this again shows our commitment to utilising new technology to improve our customer service offering.”

All mTickets need to be activated prior to travel and can then either be validated by staff at the gate-line or by scanning the smartphone against new barcode readers.

Receiving live journey and platform information straight from National Rail enquiries, passengers can also use the app as a journey planning tool and to check if trains are running on time.

The free ATW Tickets app is available to download for all smartphone platforms, with mTickets then available to purchase anytime and anywhere.

Customers will also be able to purchase Arriva Trains Wales’ award winning Mobile Multi-flex ticket, the first mobile ticketing product of its kind in the UK rail industry. More than 30,000 customers have made nearly 500,000 journeys using the ticket since its launch in 2015.
